Interlocking pavers are cast in shapes that key into one another, so the whole surface flexes and distributes loads as a single unit rather than as loose individual blocks. That structural interlock is what allows them to carry driveway and even light-truck traffic without rutting or shifting. In the Pacific Northwest, the flexible system absorbs the ground movement caused by saturated soils and freeze-thaw far better than a rigid poured slab that would crack. We build them over a deeply compacted base with edge restraints that keep the interlock tight for the life of the installation.
