Bark Replacement

We strip out spent, matted bark and lay down fresh Douglas fir or hemlock bark that stands up to Puget Sound rain.

What This Service Involves

Older bark beds in the Pacific Northwest break down fast under constant winter moisture and turn into a soggy, compacted layer that sheds water instead of absorbing it. Our crew removes the depleted material down to the soil line, edges the beds clean, and installs new medium or fine fir bark tuned to your slope and drainage. The result is a defined, water-shedding surface that protects roots through the wet season and looks sharp against Northwest evergreens. We match bark grade to whether the bed sits in full shade under conifers or open to the weather.

Benefits

Removes waterlogged, decomposed bark that harbors mold and root rot; Restores a crisp, uniform look that complements evergreen and fern plantings; Improves winter drainage so beds shed heavy rain instead of pooling; Re-establishes a defined edge that keeps bark off lawns and walkways

Our Process

1) Remove and haul away the old, broken-down bark layer; 2) Edge and grade the beds for proper drainage away from foundations; 3) Spot-treat exposed weeds and firm the soil surface; 4) Install fresh fir or hemlock bark to a consistent depth and rake it smooth

What Affects the Cost

Total square footage and bed shape complexity; Depth of old material that must be excavated and hauled; Bark grade selected, from economy fir to premium fine hemlock; Site access for wheelbarrows versus truck delivery; Slope and the amount of hand-edging required

Best Time of Year

Best done in early spring before the summer dry stretch or in early fall before the November rains set in, so new bark settles before peak wet weather.
