Bed Cultivation

We loosen and aerate compacted bed soil so roots, water, and nutrients move freely through your Puget Sound garden.

What This Service Involves

The heavy clay and constant rainfall of the Pacific Northwest pack bed soil tight, leaving roots starved for oxygen and prone to standing water. Cultivation gently breaks up that crust between plants, working in compost and improving the soil structure without disturbing established roots. We also fold in organic matter that feeds soil life and helps beds drain through the wettest months. The result is looser, healthier ground that supports stronger, more resilient plants.

Benefits

Relieves soil compaction caused by clay and heavy rain; Improves oxygen flow to plant roots; Boosts drainage to reduce root rot and standing water; Incorporates compost and organic matter for fertility; Suppresses early weeds by disrupting their seedbed

Our Process

1) Inspect soil compaction and moisture between plantings; 2) Loosen the top layer with hand tools around root zones; 3) Work in compost and organic amendments; 4) Level the surface and refresh mulch on top

What Affects the Cost

Bed square footage to be cultivated; Degree of compaction and clay content; Amount of compost and amendment added; Density of existing plantings to work around; Slope and site accessibility

Best Time of Year

Best in spring as soils warm and drain, or early fall, avoiding the waterlogged depths of a Puget Sound winter.
